scattering ashes on a windy day

Scattering ashes on a windy day: how not to do it!!

Scattering ashes on a windy day. When a scattering ashes ceremony goes wrong it often becomes a story in many a family’s mythology. The truth is scattering ashes and the wind don’t often mix well.

This poor lady gets it almost entirely wrong.

Her son filming it, sees the funny side. His mum trying to be serious realises her planning left a little to be desired.

So lessons learnt:

  • Wind and Height – the higher you go the windier it is
  • Bridges are windy because they are more exposed
  • Check to see if there is anything to prevent you from scattering the ashes – in this case a high barrier on the bridge and a ledge beneath it become major obstacles.

I don’t often join in the chorus of hilarity in such things, one has to sympathy for the poor woman  – I doubt this was her intention when she planned her mum’s send off, although the son’s infectious laughter is difficult to resist!

We’ve got lots of helpful advice about everything relating to ashes on our award winning advice pages.

scattering ceremony

A ceremony in the Sirhowy Valley

It is not often a family scattering ceremony is reported unless there is some mishap or there is a celebrity involved.

This story appeared in the South Wales Argus, a family from Gwent scatter the ashes of their relative on Sirhowy River in near Blackwood.

Apparently, they were the first to be granted permission by Natural Resources Wales to scatter in the Sirhowy Valley.

The ceremony for Colin Farmer was at the stone bridge in Cwm Corwwg in Argoed, near Blackwood.

Although Mr Farmer, who had served in the RAF and lived over the world, it was his wish was to have his ashes returned to his birthplace after he died.

A large group of around 35 family and friends gather for ceremony from all over the country some had not seen each other for decades.

Norman Windsor, whose wife was Mr Farmer’s niece, said: “During all the years, he lived in many countries but he never forgot his birth place and the home he loved in Argoed.

“He returned to Argoed and would visit his families and friends in the locality nearly every year.

“Colin was known locally for his humorous jokes that suited the moment of family and friends.”

Mr Windsor, 82, added: “The service went very well, it was tremendous.”

It is interesting to note the number of people involved, too often people speak of scattering ceremonies in hushes tones as if it is something they just wish to whisper rather than speak about, a ceremony in the shadows. However, this is quite the opposite; it has even ended up in the newspaper. Is it evidence of a growing confidence within the public about conducting a more visible ceremony? Well possibly not, but it is undeniably positive.

“Just to let you know how wonderful the family thought Roy Bushell and his son were on Saturday when we went out in their boat, Knoydart, from Greenhithe.  We had a most lovely ceremony almost under the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.  A fitting way to say Goodbye to my dear Husband who just loved the Thames.  What lovely people – they helped make it an evening to remember – along with an unexpected rainbow which appeared after the urn was plopped into the water and then a seal came up near the boat to say Hello.
Thank you again.”

anglers ashes

The forever fisherman: an anglers choice

People who have a passion for a sport often choose to have their association enshrined with their ashes. So whilst the request Mr Peter Hodges, an angler from Somerset final wish may seem strange to many, to others it has perfect resonance.

When Mr Hodge, at the age of 60, discovered that had motor neurone disease he decided that as a final request he would have his ashes mixed into his secret ground-bait recipe and flung to the fishes.

Mr Hodge had been a keen angler since the age of 20 and his favourite spot was on the River Huntspill, near Bridgewater in Somerset where he could usually be found with his rod and line.

After he was cremated his ashes were mingled with 30lbs of fish food and his wife and daughter were the first to catapult them into river to signal the start of a fishing competition for Hodges’s friends.

Mrs Hodge, 56, said: “Pete always said that when he died he wanted his ashes to be mixed in with ground-bait.

“He wanted the fish to gobble him up so he could swim up and down the river after his death.

“Everything that he wished for was done right down to the last. It was only right for us to carry out his final wishes.”

Before he died Mr Hodge said: “It may sound strange but it is my dream; to be back in the river catching fish is where I belong. I hope my friends make me proud with their catches.”

The King of Cambodia – ashes scattered on the Mekong

King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia has been cremated, he had abdicated twice, led his country into the terror of the Khmer Rouge and then out again. He was cremated in a custom made 15 storey crematorium and then his ashes were scattered on the Mekong where hundreds of thousands of Cambodians gathered in the capital Phnom Penh to witness the elaborate funeral rites.

King Sihanouk passed away in October last year at the age of 89 and has been lying in state for almost four months.

According to his last wishes his ashes were split, some were placed in a urn in the grounds of the Royal Palace near to where his infant daughter was laid to rest. The rest were scattered on the mighty Mekong in an elaborate ceremony that drew upon a number of religious traditions: Buddhist, Hindu and animist ( a religion where natural physical entities—including animals, plants, and often even inanimate objects or phenomena—possess a spiritual essence.)

The other striking thing about the cremation is that the crematoria was built at a cost of £760,000 and will be deconstructed, in accordance with Cambodian tradition, after the ceremony .

I have put two video clips in this post, a short one from the Telegraph so you get the general idea, the other is the third part of a series of three clips about the ceremony of collecting the ashes, the first two are not that interesting to the impartial observer but the third one shows mourners collecting the remains (bones), which are quite large in size. In certain eastern traditions they don’t pulverise the bones but put them whole into the river, hence the reason you see a number of bags being placed on the barge in the first video.

The collection of the ashes:

Experiences from Australia: by a river where mum was raised

Full credit goes to Beverley Hadgraft the author of the original article in the Australian daily Telegraph.

In the original article there were four different voices from four different experiences I have put a link at the bottom if you wish to see the article in full. I have split it down for people as each has an entirely separate rationale and make it easier to comment on and search for.

.

We scattered my mum’s ashes by the river where she was raised Penny McKee, 44.

“My mum Pam was always clear about where she wanted her ashes scattered: by the river in Gloucester, NSW, where she was raised. It was where her mother’s ashes were as well. We spoke to the people living on the property and told them how my grandmother had built it and they kindly gave us access. I guess they enjoyed the exchange of history.

“We chose Mum’s birthday in March to scatter her ashes. We put them in a Crabtree and Evelyn box, then walked from the house to the river, a familiar route we’d often taken as children, only now we were there with our own children. It was very spiritual. We were looking at trees that had been there in our childhoods and Mum’s childhood too, so it was very connecting.

“We four siblings scattered some ashes and then each of our children scattered some as well. ‘There you go, Mum. Back to where you came from,’ we said.

“At 11am, we had coffee and cake because that was a favourite ritual of Mum’s. Finally, we went to the cemetery where Mum’s twin brother was buried and put some ashes on his grave because she’d wanted that as well.
“As a celebrant, I know lots of people don’t know what to do about ashes, but I think it helps to start by coming up with a significant date. The bereaved feel much better if ashes aren’t just left in a cupboard. We felt blessed being able to do what Mum had wanted.”

I really liked this, it is clear that Mrs McKee has considered her actions where there is lots of symbolism with the returning to the start and personal rituals with the tea and cakes, she also separates some to go with the brother. I also agree with her that choosing a poignant date good start.

Just to let you know that we used your service at Kingston on the 23rd August and would like to say that we were very extremely pleased with the service. Darren was very helpful with all the arrangements and was very patient answering my phone calls and texts which I’m afraid were many! The service was up to the highest standard from start to finish. John was very caring, considerate and didn’t rush us at all. On behalf of all my family I’d like to say a huge thank you. Many thanks
Dina.

Hindu Funeral Ashes: why the Thames?

Any population who migrates to a different country, to a certain extent, will have to assimilate their customs and traditions into the adopted country, Hindus and  Hinduism is no different. According to the UK census of 2001 there are just over half a million Hindus in the UK although some estimates go much higher.

The Hindu population has been established for many years, first as sailors then in the second half of the twentieth century recruited as staff in the NHS and as a result of expulsions from Uganda by Idi Amin. Hindu customs have needed to adapt and Hindu funerals with them. It is the wish of most Hindus to have their cremated ashes scattered on the Ganges, but often this is not possible so they choose a local river. In the UK the Thames is very popular, now you may think that is obvious as about 80% of all UK based Hindus live in the London area, but we have a significant number of inquirers from Hindus living outside the London area who wish to have their ashes scattered on the Thames, after some enquiring we thought there was a deeper more spiritual element to it – the direction of flow, as east to west this also symbolises life as it goes from sunrise to sunset. Although Charles Cowling from the Good Funeral Guide pointed out that the Thames goes west to east  – so does anyone out there have any better suggestions? Maybe in the way the Ganges is the most prominent river in India, the Thames is the same for Britain.
