Ashes Scattered in the Ganges: Hindu Asthi Visarjan Service in Varanasi

Many Hindu families build their lives far from India, yet their final wish — or the wish of their loved ones — may still be deeply rooted in tradition. One of the most sacred of these traditions is the desire to have a person’s ashes scattered on the holy River Ganges in Varanasi.

We are now able to offer a dedicated Hindu ashes repatriation and Asthi Visarjan service, ensuring that this final rite is carried out with reverence, authenticity and cultural accuracy.

How the Service Works

We manage the entire process from the UK to India, making it as straightforward as possible for families during a difficult time.

Collection & Transportation

We arrange for the ashes to be collected from your funeral director or a location of your choosing. They are then transported by air to Varanasi, where the ritual will be performed on the sacred Ganges.

The ceremony is conducted by a trusted society dedicated exclusively to helping Hindus fulfil their final wishes in accordance with religious scripture and long-held tradition.

Traditional Hindu Rituals Performed

Each element of the ceremony adheres to texts such as the Garun Puran, Smriti Shastra, and the Vedas, ensuring complete authenticity.

1. Asthi Poojan

A ceremonial rite performed after cremation, honouring the departed soul and preparing the ashes for immersion. This ritual is described in the Garun Puran and other sacred scriptures.

2. Asthi Visarjan

The scattering of ashes into the River Ganges — one of the most sacred obligations in Hindu funeral rites. This act symbolises purification and the soul’s onward journey.

3. Shradh & Pitra Visarjan (Pind Daan)

A ritual of offering food and water to the departed for 13–14 days. Afterwards, the offerings are presented to the priest. This ceremony supports the soul’s transition and brings spiritual peace to the family line.

These steps are carried out precisely as instructed in ancient Hindu texts.

4. Brahmin Bhoj

After the completion of Asthi Visarjan and Shradh, the society will perform a Brahmin Bhoj, a traditional act of charity and respect. You may choose the number of priests and the number of days this ritual is performed.

5. Optional Gift of Charity (Sijja)

Families may also choose to include a traditional charitable offering to the priest, in keeping with Hindu custom.

Video or Photographic Recording Available

For families unable to travel, there is an option to receive video footage or photographs of the ceremony. This allows loved ones to witness the ritual with dignity and reassurance.
