Handcrafted in Devon Using Off-Mandrel Lampworking

Madeline Bunyan creates each memorial glass bead using a precise and traditional off-mandrel technique. Unlike standard beadmaking, she doesn’t use a mandrel. Instead, she forms the pendant from a solid glass rod, which also acts as the working handle—called a “punty.”

Throughout the process, Madeline switches the punty between hands as she sculpts the glass in the flame, controlling the shape and flow of colour. This hands-on method allows for incredible detail, fluid form, and a perfectly smooth finish. Once the pendant reaches its final shape, she detaches the punty and carefully melts the join to complete the piece.

Finally, the pendant is placed in a kiln to be slowly annealed. This controlled cooling phase strengthens the glass and preserves the clarity and structure of the finished piece.

These beads have a fully sterling silver cored with a tube going all the way through the bead, then flared at each end to permanently hold it in place.
