York stone is a variety of sandstone, it tight grained, carboniferous sedimentary rock. It consists of quartz, mica, feldspar, clay and iron oxides.
The memorial stone sundial comes with an antique brass sundial as standard, or you can choose one of our NEW brass Armillary globes to add to the top instead.
Or you can choose to have a handmade sundial that is available in a choice of brass or slate and will be calibrated to your postcode for a more accurate measurement of the sun’s shadow.
You can inscribe your handmade sundials just let us know what you would like when we confirm your order.
We will send you your sundial or globe with a sealant. As soon as you have placed your loved one’s ashes into the central column you simply apply the sealant and place the sundial on top securing the ashes safely inside.
Keeping the ashes
Many people keep their loved one’s ashes at home, some because they are not sure what to do with them. Some because they are not yet ready to do something with them. And some simply want to keep them close by, in the house.
Sometimes, very well meaning, friends will give advice such as ‘it’s time to move on’ or ‘you’ll feel better if you scatter/bury them’. But only you will know how you feel with the loss of your loved one and only you will know when and if the time is right to do something else with the ashes.
Keeping ashes in the garden
We are a nation of gardeners and lots of people would love to be placed to rest in the garden that they loved, nurtured and enjoyed. The main downside to burying the ashes in the garden is having to move house. If you ever have to sell your house you will have to find and dig the ashes up or leave them behind. This can be stressful for all involved. But if you keep them inside an ornament in the garden you get the best of both worlds. Your loved one’s ashes are in the place that they loved, and if you do ever need to move home you can simply take them with you.
The other benefit of a memorial garden ornament is that it is completely discreet. This will give you more time to decide what you want to do as your feelings may change over time. Until then these urns can keep the ashes safely at home without you having to explain your reasons to anyone, if someone admires the keepsake it is up to you whether you tell them or not.
Due to the shape and size there is no need to secure the memorial stone sundial to the ground, it is made of four sections the middle pedestal is hollowed to hold the urn.
If required we will supply a correctly sized urn free of charge. The sundial is fixed in place with a epoxy glue, these are shipped separately.
