Description

The Viking Longboat Urn

The Viking Longboat Urn will give a send off to remember: set upon the water, set adrift and set alight. Then as the fire ebbs away the boat sinks gracefully below the water.

Handmade from sustainable wood, finished to a very high standard. With crafted detail – shields, a striped sail and steering oars.

You simply place the cremated ashes in to hull of the boat, put the deck back in place. Then adrift and alight on a lake or calm sea.

Alternatively they can be buried like the famous boat at Sutton Hoo, in East Anglia.

They come with a stand so you can keep them on display as long as you’d like before the ceremony, or on display permanently if you wish.

They also come with two pegs that go into the hull of the boat, this is to adjust the length of time the boat floats on the water.

The Standard Viking Longboat Urn is 80cm in length. We also offer a Keepsake size which is 25cm.

Personalisation

We can arrange for a beautiful inscription into the deck of the boat for a small additional charge. We adjust the size of the wording depending on your word choice.

What others say about the Viking Longboat Urn

As Charles Cowling original author of the Good Funeral Guide puts it about the Viking send off:“It is spectacular. The flames rise to the heavens as the wind fills the longboat’s sails and it journeys. There is compelling emotional and spiritual appeal in this imagery, of journeying, transition, transfiguration and consummation. The spirit rises as the craft moves over the face of the waters; that which is earthly is subsumed by the sea. All the elements are present: earth, air, fire, water. And there is an inexorable dynamic.”

“I have to tell you that we had the service of my husband’s ashes done on Lake Superior recently with the Viking Boat Urn.  It was the most beautiful service….calm waters, rose petals from his funeral and wild flowers thrown by people into the water as the Viking Boat Urn burned and sailed.  We had beautiful sailing music.  Waters were very calm….took 33 minutes to go down.  We actually had to start the engine of our boat to circle him so there were waves.  The third wave worked and the Viking Boat Urn went down.  After that had a pink sunset on the water and then the full super moon.  Was an incredible evening and just what he had wanted.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!” Deb, USA

Want to see the Viking Longboat urn in action?

See link for the Viking Boat ceremony we filmed in Somerset. This is a natural process with wood, fire and water so we can’t predict accurately how long the boat will, the amount of fuel used, the weather and turbulence all have an impact. The calmer the water the longer it stays afloat.

Our ship has come in and we are thrilled. We are already sleeping better knowing we have made positive plans for our final departure.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of pre planning. We lost a son suddenly in 07 and would have been at the mercy of “the American way” with packages starting at $5,000. Thanks to a seminar on just that subject from our local Druid group that gave us the information and courage to stand up and give a 25 year old a fitting departure. One somewhat subdued memorial at the restaurant where he worked and then a howling party with several local rock bands and his own group playing with a man short. About a hundred of his friends and acquaintances danced till the bar closed. Their outpouring of love and good wishes was incredibly comforting and healing. Had I known about your longboat at that time we would have given him a final flaming send off.

As it is not too late, we will be purchasing a second boat and when the time comes, the family will mingle the ashes and connect the boats so the 3 of us will make final journey together. I can’t thank you enough for the peace of mind this gives me.

The Viking Longboat Urn arrived this afternoon. I opened the box to make sure there was no damage. Everything looked good. I didn’t take it out of the create because I wanted my Sister to have the pleasure of unpacking it.

The Service was last Wednesday and we used a Viking Horn for the urn. My sister saved some ashes for the Longboat, which she plans to display for a while. When she is ready ‎we will take it to Laughlin, Nevada and send it down the Colorado River. Her husband kidingly had said he wanted his ashes put in a Viking Longboat and sailed away. So thanks to you he will eventually get his wish.

    Best regards,

I had promised to let you know how it went and some of the children felt I should say that it was harder to burn than we expected, just so that you could possibly say in the instructions that it needed quite a bit of bbq gel to ignite it.

It was a very emotional day for us all as you can imagine but the incident with the boat helped to lift the mood and Charlie would have been the first one to be chuckling so, as I said earlier, it was a very fitting send off for him and certainly not stressful because of the boat as you suggested. Also I do agree with you that humour does help in this situation however strange some would view this.

Anyway, thank you again for your kind consideration.

    Kind regards,

  7. Katrina

I am blown away by how amazing this is. I m looking forward to giving my Father the best send off as I know how much this would mean to him. I am how over the moon thank you very much.
