Porcelain or Ceramic Urns

Ceramic is a broad term that includes earthenware, bone ware, pottery, and, yes, porcelain. The word “ceramic” is derived from a Greek word that means “pottery,” and describes any article made of natural clay hardened by heat. These two variables, clay and heat, determine an item’s ceramic type. Clay is formed by combining any number of organic substances, and the types of substances used determine the quality of the clay. The temperature at which the clay is baked, as well as the baking duration, also vary greatly and determine the hardness of the end product.

Because the variables can be widely adjusted, it is easy to see why there are so many different types of ceramic, and why there is so much confusion. It is, after all, correct to refer to porcelain as ceramic because it is created from a special clay heated to a certain temperature. While ceramics have been around for thousands of years, porcelain is a comparatively new development. Porcelain is made from a clay that has a paste-like quality and is fired at high temperatures. The process was first mastered in China in the 1300s. This Chinese porcelain is made from a hard-paste clay fired at very high temperatures, producing the white, glass-like, finish that we associate with porcelain.

Keeping the ashes

Many people keep their loved one’s ashes at home, some because they are not sure what to do with them, some because they are not yet ready to do something with them and some simply want to keep them close by, in the house.  Sometimes, very well meaning, friends will give advice such as ‘it’s time to move on’ or ‘you’ll feel better if you scatter/bury them’. But only you will know how you feel about the loss of your loved one and only you will know when and if the time is right to do something, if ever, with their ashes. Until then these urns can keep the ashes safely and discreetly at home without you having to explain your reasons to anyone, if someone admires the beautiful urn then it is up to you whether you tell them or not.
